Madhyapur Thimi, Jan 10: Chairman of Nepal Workers' and Peasants' Party Narayan Man Bijukchhe said the local bodies should not be restored on the basis of political agreement.
Inaugurating a felicitation programme organized by Banmala Service Committee, Bhaktapur here today, Chairman Bijukchhe said there would be representatives of all 25 political parties in the local bodies.
He stressed on the election for the local bodies or the restoration of previous mechanism. There was no alternative of election to elect people's representatives, Chairman Bijukchhe added.
Similarly, he said the load shedding problem would be solved if the technical employees carry out their duties honestly.
On the occasion, he felicitated 26 elderly people of Banmala Community offering them shawls. As many as 62 SLC graduates from the Community were also honoured at the programme. Also speaking at the programme presided over by Community Chairman Jagat Lal Banmala were Central Convenor of the Community Shiva Ram Banmala, Central Member Tirtha Narayan Mali and among others. A cultural dance group, Nava Durga Devgans, who worship Goddess Durga and dance at different places during festivals in Kathmandu valley, has decided to put an end to the dancing ceremony at Thimi municipality of Bhaktapur, citing threats to their lives.Every year, Nava Durga Devgans (NDD) from Nava Durga temple in Bhaktapur perform Nava Durga dance donning masks at different parts of the valley. The Nava Durga dance begins in Yomari Purnima from Digu tole in Madhyapur Thimi and last for seven days in Balkumari, Omana, Dathu tole, Layaku, Nagadesh, Bode, Chitrapur and other parts of the municipality.The dance ends at Maru tole on the seventh day with Nava Durga Puja, which is frequently performed during nights. However, this year the dancers returned to Bhaktapur on the third day after some hooligans pelted them with bricks and stones.According to NDD, they reached Pabhu tole to rest and have food after performing puja and dance at different places but miscreants, who had attacked them on Sunday night as well, took their food and a scuffle broke out.Talking to this daily, Narayan Man Banmala, a member of the NDD, said, "Vandals try to disrupt traditional dance every year, terming it meaningless. This poses a threat to our life and we are unable to continue to it though our culture is most important for us." "We conclude the dance with a prayer for peace in the city, but we have decided to put the practice to an end."Goods offered during the worshipping ceremony are taken as holy 'prasad' and distributed among the local people. "Some hooligans snatched away the prasad," said Banmala.Raju Banmala, Naresh Banmala, Satya Ram Banmala, Ash Lal Banmala, Sundar Banmala, Aman and Bikash were injured in the clash. Sabin Shrestha, who was seriously hurt, was taken to Korean Hospital and later referred to Bir Hospital.According to Banmala, there are 19 Devgans, 38 assistants and three children in the group.When the executive officer of Madhyapur Thimi municipality was asked about the incident, he expressed ignorance. Their Majesties visit Nawa Durga temple

BHAKTAPUR, Oct 31 – Their Majesties King Gyanendra and Queen Komal on Wednesday visited this medieval town and offered puja to Goddess Nawa Durga and received prasad and tika on the occasion of Kojagrat Poornima, the last day of Dashain.
His Royal Highness Crown Prince Paras and Her Royal Highness Crown Princess Himani accompanied Their Majesties. Her Royal Highness Princess Prerana was also present on the occasion.
According to the priests at the Nawa Durga temple, the King and Queen have been visiting the temple since 1988 on the final day of Dashain. However, it was a first visit of the new monarch to the temple since his accession to the throne in June.
It was also the first visit of the Crown Prince to a public place. His Majesty the King declared Paras as the Crown Prince last Friday. The Royal Family members also visited the temple of Taleju Bhawani, Mul Chowk of the temple, Bhairab Chowk, Nag Pokhari, Kumari Chowk, Bhandarkhal Pokhari and Bhandarkhal Chowk of this historic city.
Residents of Bhaktapur congregated at the temple premises to welcome Their Majesties and the other members of the Royal Family. The residents said that the crowd at the temple premises this time was thinner compared to previous years when a large number of people from Bhaktapur and surrounding villages would converge to welcome the King, Queen and other members of the Royal Family.
Said Krishna Pradhan, a local resident, "People from as far as Kathmandu and Lalitpur would come here to see the Royals but this year there are less people." Pradhan lives just in front of the temple and claims that she has been seeing the Royals on this day since 1988.
Added Gopal Krishna Shrestha, who came all the way from Dhulikhel to see the Royals, "People would start thronging the temple premises from as early as 10 a.m. But today I don’t see them here; it’s already 2 p.m." Their Majesties arrived at the temple at 3 p.m.
Many residents were also seen peeping through the windows of their houses, as the Royals walked past the street of Gachhen and the Bhaktapur Durbar Square.
Rajkumar Banmala, the head priest at the Nawa Durga temple, complained about the problems the temple is facing with The Kathmandu Post. "We are facing many problems: We don’t have enough fund to perform even the temple rituals. Besides this festival, we have to conduct more than a hundred other rituals each year, and the temple is not receiving anything from the land Gudhi (trust)."
The head priest of the Taleju temple, Dr. Siddhi Bir Karmacharya said he was very happy to welcome Their Majesties. "I am very happy that the Royal Family also visited the Taleju temple and performed puja. We want this to happen in the days to come as well".

An Introduction to Nava Durga Bhaktapur, the city of devotees, is famous for its temple architecture and its magnificent representation of gods and goddesses created by anonymous Newar craft-masters during the reign of the Mallas. Among the various gods and goddesses of Bhaktapur, Nava Durga, the mask-deities is mobile, dramatic and mysterious. As a matter of fact Bhaktapur is renowned for Nava Durga.
Nava Durga means nine Durgas composed of Mahakali, Kumari, Barahi, Brahmayani, Mahesvari, Viasnavi, Indrani, Mahalaksmi and Tripurasundari. Durgas are the various demonic representation or manifestation of Parvati, the Sakti of Shiva, in tantric tradition. In Bhaktapur Nava Durga is a set of masks with a ritual continual life force which begins from Dashain in October and ends in Bhagasti in June. Since the day of Bhagasti all the deities in Nepal live not in the land but beneath the water until Gathamuga Chare, a little less than five weeks later. On the day of Gathamuga the gathas take some black clay from the field and erect a linga of Shiva. Some of this soil is left and preserved in order to be added to new masks. The gathas, i.e.; mask-dancers, musicians and leader of the god-house go to Taleju with the new set of masks ritually made of specially clay mixed with the ashes of the previous masks and of the black clay, the remains of the Shiva linga made on the day of Gathamuga Chare. It is at the night of Dashain when the Karmacharya gives life-force, to the masks with the mantra. Therefore, these masks have tantric significance. Since the time the masks have life force, they are considered gods and goddesses. The role of Taleju is great, though she is not presented within the Nava Durga Pantheon. The new set of masks is exhibited in the celebratory Brahmayani Pitha beside the Hanumante River. This happens on the day of the Vijaya Dashami. Brahmayani Pitha which is in the eastern side of the city is also the Pitha of Nava Durga; Brahmayani is/was the guardian deity of the people and the king of Bhaktapur.
Though there are nine Durgas, only seven, Mahakali, Kumari, Barahi, Brahmayani, Mahesvari, Indrani and Vaisnavi are represented in the mask-dance and her icon is kept in Nava Durga god-house at Gachhe tole. Mahalaksmi, i.e. Shifo-dyo also is not present there in the form of mask. She is always in a small chariot that is kept on the ground during the public performances of Nava Durga. She is more abstract, important and powerful. She is regarded to be the Nava Durga's own goddess. A vessel with Maha Lakshmi icon contains ambrosia and other tantric things. It is enshrined in the god-house. The 'six-armed image framed by lions at her feet and a large aureole of flames has no face. The face, if it was ever represented, has been carefully cut out from the surface plane'. So she is concerned with cemetery as well. She is of tantric concern. She leads the procession of masked Nava Durga. Apart from seven Durgas in Nava Durga dance, there are other six masks. They are of Shiva, Ganesh, Bhairava, Sveta Bhairava, Sima and Duma. Sima and Duma portrayed roaring, an expression of their fierceness, are the messengers of death. Also they are the bodyguards of Shiva. They rarely dance in the group-dance. Theirs is a police function. Children taunt them. If a child is caught by either of them, it is considered an evil omen. Therefore, some parents often pay them beforehand that their children may not be caught. This belief reflects their role as messengers of death. Shiva's mask is smaller and it is not worn. Ganesh carries it in the group-dance. He fishes in the public performances.
The Nava Durga dance proceeds according to the beatings of Dyokhin and the performances of Taa (a pair of thick, small cyambals) and Kanhe-baja. The dyokhin, taa and kanhe-baja have symbolic meaning. It is said that the ringing sound of the musical instruments of Nava Durga dance not only gives the rhythmic signals to the dancers but also removes the people's troubles and obstacles caused by the evil beings. The tantric version is that it gives peace, prosperity and happiness to the people. For this purpose, this dance is performed in every tole of Bhaktapur. It is also taken to Deupatan, Banepa, nala, Dhulikhel, Panauti, Srikhandapur and Chaukot every year and in Hadigaun every twelve years. The people of these places devotedly offer puzas to the deities. "King Suvarna Malla of Bhaktapur introduced the dance of the Nava Durga, having heard that they had been seen dancing at night".
